How I teach my 4th grader, on the spectrum, write a paragraph.
My son spent his foundation years writing in the Resource Center or at home because he engaged in behaviors – tantrum, aggression, work refusals to name a few.
In 3rd grade, he started to express his thoughts in pictures. He drew them but hated writing. So I used my NLP and PCIT skills to motivate him to write in paragrph. here is how you do it.
Firstly – I believe that every child inspite of their disability is able to learn. This belive stems from my therapist who taught me the teaching of Eric Bern – Transactional Analysis.
Pre-requisite to learning
Study Ready
- can he sit down
- can he follow 2 -3 steps direction.
- can he write or draw with a pencil
Understand your child’s problem. In my case
- he can’t draw
- he doesn’t the language to express his ideas
- he wasn’t able to deliver multiple steps instructions.
Solution
- I put him into drawing class. Outschool Ms Dara
- We draw images. We use images to communicate
- I taught him to follow instructions.
Writing Paragram means
Pick a topic. Let your child pick the topic.
Describe 3 (maxiumum) about the topic
let him describe what he wants to say. Do not correct or shaped his ideas – rather allow it to flow.
Give opinion.
ask him what he thinks, you can guide him by giving the answer – for example.
I think your drawing is …
what do you think of your drawing
what do you like about it
Then gives him the sentene starter – I like my drawing because,
